‘INEC must declare results of Ajeromi-Ifelodun House of Reps poll’ vanguardngr.com vanguardnews

An electoral official looks at documents at the state headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on March 10, 2019. – Nigeria’s election authorities announced the suspension of activities in volatile opposition-held Rivers State on March 10 citing violence and threats to its staff, as tensions rise in the wake of closely-watched regional elections.

In a statement by the Rita Orji Campaign Office, entitled: Undue delay and failure to declare the result of Ajeromi Ifelodun House of Representatives Federal Constituency, by Director-General, Mr. Charles Ejimadu said: “There is a valid court order directing INEC to declare the results of the elections as conducted and announced at the polling units,” and noted that it was already a week when ruling was given by court.

“We did not expect any further delay from INEC in obeying the court order, as we already know who the winner is: Rita Orji, with a margin, is unprecedented. “Rita Orji won convincingly. We urge you to declare the result and announce her officially without delay. She and Ajeromi Ifelodun electorate should not be subjected to this harrowing experience because she does not belong to the ruling party.

“It is curious that elections at the same polling units for the offices of the President and Senate were announced, while results for House of Representatives withheld.“We are in possession of copies of the original results for 67 polling units out of the 71 polling units. Elections were conducted at the polling units, results were declared and pasted at the polling units, while agents were given their copies including the security agents.

INEC under 1999 Constitution: Amend INEC law to permit electronic transmission of results (3) - Vanguard NewsINEC under 1999 Constitution: Amend INEC law to permit electronic transmission of results (3) - Vanguard NewsIn the last two weeks I have identified areas requiring amendments to the law to strengthen the electoral process and aid the election of transformational leaders. Specifically last week, I advocated an adoption of electronic means of transmission of election results by INEC to forestall the growing incidents of attacks on electoral officials and also changes to the law to mandate the determination of pre-election matters well before the conduct of the elections themselves. Two events have since further brought home the need for these changes. The first was the admission of INEC itself during the week that it has increasingly come under attack by hoodlums desirous of snatching or destroying results sheets so as to stop collation, while the second relates to two judgements delivered by the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory and the Court of Appeal regarding validity of the nomination of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party at the gubernatorial election in Osun State. That issues touching on the nomination of the candidate are yet to be fully resolved, months after the conduct of the election is indeed worrying. This week I will discuss further specific areas that require attention if Nigeria is to elect transformational leaders. Full restructuring:
