Improve funding for water, sanitation, WHO tasks poor countries

The World Health Organisation and UN-Water on Thursday advised poor countries to urgently increase investment to strengthen drinking-water and sanitation systems for improved public health.

“Too many people lack access to reliable and safe drinking-water, toilets and hand-washing facilities, putting them at risk of deadly infections and threatening progress in public health. It showed that, in the majority of countries, the implementation of water, sanitation and hygiene policies and plans are constrained by inadequate human and financial resources.

Gilbert Houngbo, the Chairperson, UN-Water, and President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, suggested that water, sanitation and hygiene were crucial for a healthy society.
