Stakeholders have urged government to deploy health tax policy in curbing excessive consumption of tobacco, alcohol, and Sugar Sweetened

According to them, earmarking health taxes was constitutional because statutorily, all taxes are collected and sent to the federation account, which is then shared among the three tiers of government. Alawode noted that NCDs account for 29 per cent of all mortality and 22 per cent of premature deaths in the country, and urged the Federal Government to implement and enforce strong health tax policies to address the situation.

He said: “Stakeholders have to prepare to tackle misleading industry-driven narratives aimed at either weakening or halting implementation of health taxes for profit reasons but often disguised as economic advice to the Ministries Departments and Agencies .” Justice Efe Ikponmwonba of a Benin High Court has convicted and sentenced a 23-year-old man, Joseph Edosa, to two years in prison for fraud. Ikponmwonba, however, gave him an option of N100,000 fine, following a plea bargain.
