There was tension at the state headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Owerri, the Imo State capital as the state Commissioner of Police, Bolaji Fafowora and his men besieged
the centre, asking the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof Francis Chukwuemeka Ezeonu, to stop the announcement of the results of the supplementary election in Orlu/Orsu/Oru East Federal Constituency held last Saturday in the state.
The announcement of the results of the election was stopped after thugs invaded the collation centre in Orlu and tore the result sheets.INEC had continued the collation before the CP arrived. However, following the directive from INEC headquarters, the collation of the remaining four units was being announced so that the eventual winner could be announced before the CP approached the REC asking him to suspend action. But his instruction was rebuffed by the REC and other INEC officials present.
It took the intervention of the INEC commissioner in charge of South-South region, Mrs Meg Agbamuche, who explained the guidelines to the commissioner before he allowed the process to continue. The commissioner, who was constantly on the phone, had to step outside. It was gathered that one of the parties had obtained a court order stopping further announcement, which the police had probably gone to enforce.DOWNLOAD THE PUNCH NEWS APP NOW ON
