The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, addressed a misunderstanding during his presentation of the Nigeria Police Force's (NPF) 2025 budget to the national assembly's joint committee on police affairs. The IGP clarified that the NPF only submitted one budget document, stating that there was a pre-existing agreement for him to present a condensed version. Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, who arrived late, raised concerns about discrepancies between the presented budget and a more comprehensive document, leading to a brief disruption. The IGP's spokesperson later issued a statement outlining the circumstances and emphasizing that both versions of the budget were accessible to all committee members.
Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police (IGP), clarified that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) did not submit two distinct 2025 budget documents to the national assembly . On Thursday, Egbetokun appeared before the joint committee of the national assembly on police affairs to present and defend the NPF's 2025 budgetary allocations.
However, a minor incident occurred during the presentation when the IGP was detailing the budget for five new zonal police headquarters planned across the country. During this, Mark Esset, a representative from Akwa Ibom in the House of Representatives, questioned why the budget specifics being read by the IGP were not included in the document provided to him. Onyekachi Nwebonyi, a senator representing Ebonyi north central, echoed the sentiment, stating he was entitled to the document containing the budget details presented by the IGP. Despite this, Abubakar Makki Yalleman, the chairman of the lower chamber committee on police affairs, ruled that the IGP should continue with his presentation. In a statement released on Friday by Muyiwa Adejobi, the force spokesperson, the IGP explained that the drama at the national assembly was unnecessary and avoidable. Egbetokun stated that two versions of his presentation – a comprehensive one and a condensed version – were made available to the committee members prior to his appearance. He emphasized that there was a consensus among the committee members to have him present the abridged version, as they all had access to both documents. However, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, who arrived late, began referencing the comprehensive version despite the IGP presenting the abridged one. Despite explanations from other committee members about the earlier agreement and the consistency between both versions, the senator refused to acknowledge this and abruptly left the session
