OPINION: Ighalo and Iheanacho’s worship centre
The Nigerian football player, Odion Ighalo, scored his first goal as his new team Manchester United thrashed their opponent 5-0 recently. Another Nigerian player, Kelechi Iheanacho, once with Manchester City, has found scoring form of late with Leicester. Like other viewers, I took note of what both players did each time they scored goals. But it was Ighalo’s action in particular after he scored his first goal for Man U that made writing this piece inevitable.
Ighalo and Iheanacho don’t set out to collectively celebrate their goals with their teammates. They don’t celebrate the players who ensure that balls get to them in their positions as central strikers. Note that the rest of a football team necessarily plays for the central striker, ensuring he gets the ball where he can do massive damage. When a team is configured to function this way, it can be imagined what the mood is when a goal is scored.
He has continued with the same pattern at Leicester. In case the point is missed as to the extent his approach may put teammates off, I give an example of what happened lately during an FA Cup match that Leicester played. Iheanacho scored a goal. He ran towards the corner flag, his hands pointing skywards. One would think that was enough thanksgiving on a football pitch. But he also knelt down, pointing skywards and staring devotedly at the skies as though he were in a worship centre.
