You don’t trust the government, you say? Get over it!
Look, you wouldn’t know it, so little fanfare has there been, but this Wednesday will mark 250 years since Captain Cook first set foot in Botany Bay. As one who wrote a book on the subject, I am more than usually interested in how we as a people commemorate – which is the right word, rather than celebrate – the occasion.
Get it? When the debate inevitably arises on Wednesday as to whether or not Cook and after him Governor Philip were part of what could be termed as an invasion or not, I reckon that quote says Cook would line up beside those who say it was – before going on to explain that his own intention had nothing to do with colonising.
