The fa’amatai system is a long-standing tradition in the Samoan islands. And while there aren’t many women who hold matai (chief) titles, I’m happy to say I come from a family that respects the leadership of women.

It wasn’t until I was in my mid-20s that I began to learn more about my Samoan heritage and what it means to carry the Samoan culture. That’s when I started my blog,, to connect with islanders and learn more about not just my Samoan heritage but also our other Pacific Islands. I started to learn more and more about what it means to become a matai. To not just care for your family and your village but also for Samoa and the legacy of our people.
