Chinese telecoms giant Huawei's second-quarter revenue plunged 38 percent, according to figures released Friday, with smartphone sales suffering from US sanctions and the offloading of its budget brand Honor.

This file photo taken on September 18, 2019 shows a Huawei logo during the 2019 Huawei Connect conference in Shanghai. – Huawei has overtaken Samsung to become the number one smartphone seller worldwide in the second quarter this year, industry tracker Canalys said on July 30, 2020.

The United States has provided no evidence of spying but has barred Huawei from acquiring technologies crucial to its operations such as microchips and cut it off from using Google’s Android operating system. Huawei’s travails have forced it to quickly pivot into new business lines including enterprise computing, technology for intelligent vehicles, and software.“These have been challenging times, and all of our employees have been pushing forward with extraordinary determination and strength,” he said.

Its networking gear has also been removed or delayed in a succession of Western countries on national security concerns.
