Cast On. My grandmother was my role model, with her knitting and the stuff of her knitting: the flat fake-leather folder of coloured aluminium needles that zipped up the side. The needles were all numbered and stayed in their designated slots, except for the mystery needles that gravitated to the middle of the case – the loose ones with points on either end, the circular ones that were held together by thin plastic cables that called mitten strings to mind.
