Muyiwa Olumilua, Ekiti State Commissioner for Information and son of a former governor of old Ondo State, Evangelist Bamidele Olumilua, tells ABIODUN NEJO that his father left behind a good nameThe head of the family was Evangelist Bamidele Isola Olumilua. He was born in 1940 and died on Thursday, June 4, 2020 at the age of 80. He was married to three women – my mother, Theresa Gbesimilowo Olumilua; Evangelist Bolatito Olumilua; and Mrs Olayinka Olumilua. He had several children.
There were no rewards for doing well because his expectations were high. My dad felt it was normal for you to do well as he was a very bright student as a youngster. He believed his children should do exceptionally well. When you did well, he would only say ‘that’s good’ or maybe on some rare occasions, say ‘I’m proud of you’.
To me, he was a father, mentor, role model and beacon of light who gave me directions. My father was everybody’s father. My father actually brought so many people to live in our house; some were relations while others were strangers. To the state, he was a leader; he was someone everybody looked up to. In the nation too, I believe it was the same thing.
He did. Chief MKO Abiola was quite close to my dad. The truth is that when Abiola came forward as a candidate, my father was supporting Alhaji Babagana Kingibe. Olumilua and the Ondo State delegation were supporting Kingibe. But after the primary and the deadlock at the end of the day, Kingibe came to meet my dad to say they had reached an agreement to support MKO Abiola. Right there and then, because my father was a loyal party man, he supported Abiola.
