“People who can capture and leverage and utilize data are going to be at the competitive forefront because AI is coming. I think it is going to be really critical in the face of our health care system that is facing an aging population and is increasingly resource-constrained,” Edwards said. Sun’s work includes using AI to try to predict in real-time which cardiac patients are at the highest risk of in-hospital cardiac arrest. Beyond identifying those patients, the research involves changing the system of responding to such medical crises. He is also using artificial intelligence to look at surgical workflows to improve efficiency.

Some have raised fears about the use of artificial intelligence in the field of medicine, but officials at the Heart Institute and elsewhere says those who don’t make use of it to enhance knowledge and care will be left behind.
