I’m an English Professor who works at the intersection of technology and the humanities. I teach a wide variety of topics including programming (natural language processing), American fiction, and digital media.
Kind words make people feel good, and a video game is aiming to create conversations between real people. Even though AI can create conversations between people and machines, they might not be as effective or make people feel good in the same way.
When I receive a reply to one of my own letters, I know that the person on the other end also likely struggled to find the right words. They took time out of their own day to think about my feelings, hopes, and difficulties. This cost means something to me, even if they didn’t quite get the words right. This cost feels like care.
While generative AI holds enormous potential, it’s worthwhile to think about how the nature of reciprocity is key to combating loneliness and to making us feel heard and cared for.
