Brits were warned to be 'careful' in the popular tourist destination. A British expat has sounded the alarm about a particular scam in an area frequented by tourists on the island

The island of Tenerife, the crown jewel of the Canary Islands, played host to an impressive 5.6 million visitors last year, topping the popularity charts for the archipelago. Its considerable size means it caters to all sorts of holidaymakers from those seeking a tranquil beach getaway to party-goers looking to dive into vibrant nightlife.

However, as with any tourist hotspot, crime can be a concern. A British expat has now sounded the alarm about a particular scam in an area frequented by tourists on the island. TikTok user @seb_tenerife, who has made Tenerife his home, highlighted a ruse reportedly also prevalent in Benidorm. The con involves someone asking to use your mobile phone under the guise of needing directions or claiming they've lost their companions, only to snatch the phone and make a run for it once it's unlocked.

He mentioned that "pickpockets" are another problem to watch out for. "I would just again be very careful," he advised. "Benidorm is a lot like Tenerife - both great holiday destinations, great weather, booze is flying, everyone's here for a good time, very similar sorts of destinations But obviously, like anywhere where holiday places are You've just got to be wary.

In his comments section, Seb attributed these incidents largely to intoxication, stating that they occur "due to alcohol", with revellers too inebriated to stay alert. His video has gained traction, amassing over 15,000 views on TikTok.
