The head coach of the Super Eagles, Finidi George, on Friday, released his first official squad for the upcoming game against Bafana Bafana of South Africa. This is indeed the third fixture Finidi will be handling for the Nigerian national team.
The first two were friendlies against Ghana and Mali, when he was appointed on an interim basis following Jose Peseiro's exit. The Eagles beat the Black Stars 2-1, before losing 2-0 to the Malians. Now, he has beaten foreign and domestic coaches to the job and the fans and cynics are ready to judge. His immediate task is to revive Nigeria's quest to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The three-time African champions began the series with two draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
'My immediate thought is that Finidi George really does not seem to have grasped the situation Nigeria is in,' Chukwu said. 'Two games in, four points have been dropped, and up next are two of the toughest matches on paper for the Super Eagles. 'To select that defence is bold; one might even say it's foolhardy. 'Even accounting for injury, if you cannot, at first glance, figure out the configuration of your defence, then you're in a world of trouble.
