A high-level review of the Commonwealth health department has called for a major review of the national pandemic response in the next 12 months.

was undertaken by former associate secretary Andrew Tongue, Boston Consulting Group’s Larry Kamener and Infrastructure department deputy secretary David Hallinan.

The review said with the planned establishment of an Australian Centre for Disease Control in 2024 it is timely to review what has worked well, what hasn’t worked so well, and what should be done differently. Health Minister Mark Butler continued to resist calls for a COVID-19 review. A spokeswoman noted the prime minister had committed to an inquiry into the pandemic response.

“The department has developed a strong sense of self, with clear values and professional and supportive culture and behaviours.”The review said the need for a significant lift in strategic policy comes as the department faces major challenges. These include an ageing population, more chronic rather than acute diseases and growing mental health demands. These are all set against increasing workforce shortages across the health, aged and disability sectors.
