SINGAPORE — Singapore recorded the first “unhealthy” haze reading in over three years on Saturday afternoon (14 September).

As of 4 pm, the 24-hr Pollutant Standards Index reading for the West area of Singapore entered the unhealthy range at 103, according to the National Environment Agency website. The readings for the North, Central, South and East areas were 89, 88, 97, and 86, respectively, in the moderate range. The last time Singapore recorded a reading in the same range was at 2pm on 29 August 2016 in the North area.

In a press release issued on Friday evening, the NEA said that the 1-hr PM2.5 concentration readings over the next 24 hours are expected to range between Band I and Band II . “Moderate to dense smoke haze continued to emanate from persistent hotspots there, and hazy conditions persisted in Singapore and some parts of Peninsular Malaysia,” said the NEA.There may be brief showers in Singapore for the next few days, but the weather over Sumatra and Kalimantan is forecast to remain generally dry, said the NEA.

With the haze in the unhealthy range, the NEA advises the public to reduce, minimise or avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion.
