UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expresses deep concern over the US decision to slash humanitarian and development funding, warning of devastating consequences for millions of vulnerable people worldwide.

Antonio Guterres , the United Nations secretary-general, has expressed grave concerns over the US decision to slash humanitarian and development funding, warning of dire consequences for millions of vulnerable people worldwide. Guterres stated that these cuts threaten essential humanitarian assistance and development projects, potentially worsening conditions for those in need and jeopardizing global stability .

\He emphasized the devastating impact these reductions will have on vulnerable populations across war-torn regions, areas ravaged by natural disasters, and other crisis-stricken zones. Guterres highlighted that American funding directly supports critical services such as healthcare, shelter, water, food, and education for individuals facing war, famine, and disasters. He stressed that the generosity of the American people has not only saved lives but has also contributed to global peace, stability, and prosperity. \The UN chief pointed to specific examples of how these funding cuts will severely affect critical programs in countries like Afghanistan, Syria, South Sudan, and Ukraine. In northeast Syria, the lack of funding will significantly disrupt relief efforts for 2.5 million people who rely on aid. Cash-based aid programs supporting one million people in Ukraine have already been suspended, and funds for refugee support programs in South Sudan have run dry, exacerbating overcrowding and unsanitary conditions at border areas. Beyond humanitarian relief, Guterres warned that the cuts will weaken global health initiatives, counterterrorism efforts, and the fight against drug trafficking. He noted that the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) may have to halt key counter-narcotics operations, including those addressing the fentanyl crisis. Furthermore, funding for programs tackling HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and cholera has been stopped. Despite these challenges, Guterres affirmed that the UN will continue to provide life-saving assistance while actively seeking alternative funding sources
