Seven people, including two unarmed civilians and five security operatives, were killed by gunmen in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Gunmen operating in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State killed seven people on Monday. Two of the victims were unarmed civilians who were planning a burial, while the others were security operatives. A viral video circulating on social media showed the bodies of two victims, members of the Anambra State Vigilante Group (AVG). The state police command's spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident.
In a press release, he said the commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered an immediate manhunt of the assailants. The incident happened at about 11.20am, and the attack resulted in the death of seven persons, among which are two unarmed passers-by. A Joint Security Team rescued one of the victims who is currently responding to treatment in a hospital. The commissioner of Police visited the scene and interviewed eyewitnesses. Armed men started shooting sporadically at a venue where preparations were ongoing for a burial ceremony scheduled for January 2, 2025. While escaping the scene, the armed men shot at two Security Operatives at a security Observation Post close to the Local Government Headquarters by the Express Road. Ikenga said the CP has extended his condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives, especially the good people of Ihiala over the sad incident. He further assured that the perpetrators would be hunted down
