The veteran right-hander will start Game 3 for the Guardians against the Tigers on Wednesday night at Comerica Park.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Alex Cobb was in his third big league season with the Rays when he started a wild card game against the Guardians. Cobb and the Rays won, 4-0, to advance to the ALDS where Cobb made one more start before they were eliminated.
“I did not want to get traded,” said Cobb. “I was coming back from injury. I was in a place that I was going to be comfortable that I could get my feet wet again.”“When you have the opportunity to go to a contending team, it makes it a lot easier,” said Cobb. The delays continued. A torn finger nail on his right index finger and a blister on the middle finger of the same hand limited him to three regular-season starts and put Cobb on the injured list not once, but twice. He has not made a big league start since Sept. 1 when he retired 18 straight Pirates.
“We created a very tough environment for him the other day with the crowd noise, with having our guys hitting against him with a full field,” said Vogt. “He even said, ‘I’m ready.’ Through all of this year’s setbacks, big and small, Cobb kept telling himself, “In the end it be worth it.”
