A group, Joint Action Front (JAF) has called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) to declare a nationwide strike and protest over recent hikes in petrol prices occasioned by subsidy removal. The group in a statement on Thursday jointly signed by its Chairperson Dr. Dipo Fashina and Secretary, Comrade Abiodun Aremu, said since President Bola Tinubu made the pronouncement on Monday, the country has been further plunged into a crisis as petrol prices went as high as N600.

According to the group, the entrenched corruption in the government and planned implementation of anti-poor neo-liberal economic policies by Tinubu’s government will not make the masses get any benefit.The statement reads in part,"The Joint Action Front condemns the pronouncement of Bola Tinubu during his inauguration as the President of Nigeria on May 29 that the 'petrol subsidy is gone'.

“With the entrenched corruption in the government and planned implementation of anti-poor neo-liberal economic policies by Tinubu government, there will be no benefit to the masses."For instance, Tinubu has planned to introduce tuition fees in universities which will mean high school fees beyond the capacity of many working-class people and the poor.
