A non-governmental organisation fighting for the rights of women, Women's Aid Collective, has hailed the abolition of girl-child marriage and other obnoxious traditional practices against women in Enugu State.
She said that harmful traditional practices such as widowhood practices, child/early and forced marriages, female circumcision and disinheritance of widows should be consigned to the dustbin of history.
“The negative implications of girl – child marriage on the girls brides, family and society is huge. The immediate health risks include Vesico Vagina Fistula, unsafe motherhood and maternal morbidity and mortality. “As it were, other forms of gender based violence should be criminalised and women and girls protected. Women and girls have a right to live a life free from violence. They must enjoy their right to marry a person of their choice that is called reproductive self determination and respect to their bodily integrity.
