The leadership of the Society for Water and Sanitation, NEWSA, in Taraba State, have stressed the need for increased budgetary allocation to water, sanitation and hygiene in the state. They said the call, if taken into consideration, will help prioritize and improve water sanitation and hygiene across the state.
The state Coordinator, Boniface Koson, who made the call on Friday during a one-day Multi-Stakeholder Consultative meeting in Jalingo, emphasized the need for improved public perception, increased political prioritization, adequate funding and strong policies and institutions. Koson said the urgency underscored the fact that 48 million Nigerians still engaged in open defecation and only eight percent of the population adhere to clean hand washing practices.
To combat such challenges and to achieve Nigeria's goal of becoming open-defecation-free by 2024, the state government must act on proffered solutions. Aligning his weight to that of Koson, the Managing Director, Taraba Agency for Water Cooperation, Musa Buba Siam, TAWACO, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring universal access to clean water, sanitation facilities and hygiene education across the state.
