Olokode said membership of cult groups in search of financial breakthrough among the youths was unfashionable while he was growing up, warning that secondary school pupils might be new targets for initiation by some established cultists.
Olokode also frowned at glorification of fraud by society through reward of perpetrators with chieftaincy titles and public honour. Asuquo said, “Many youths are unemployed. They took to money rituals and other forms of criminal acts out of frustration. These days before most youths can get a job, they have to bribe their way with huge amounts of money. Where do you expect someone who has no job to get money to bribe?
On his part, the spokesperson for the Delta State Coalition of Civil Societies, Victor Ojei, blamed governments at both the state and federal levels for not living up to their responsibilities, thus driving youths to take solace in criminal acts. “We also have millions of poor graduates and the number increases yearly. We cannot continue like this. The government has a lot of work to do,” he stated.
He also said in the past those who engaged in any form of embezzlement were not readily acceptable in society.According to him, because the act involves impersonation, pretence and lying, the drugs they use enhance defrauding skills and keep them awake and alert to appear convincing. He said, “Young people are waiting to see models who have attained satisfaction through contentment, hard-work and integrity.”
Olawuyi added, “Back then, commodities such as vegetable, pepper, yam and others would be placed beside the road and the price would be indicated with pebbles. Later in the evening, the owner would check them. If the items had been bought, he or she would get the money beside the packed items. If they had not been bought, the seller would pack them.
Olawuyi lamented that as things were now, youths weren’t ready to pass through rigorous learning processes, but preferred short-cut to achieving undeserved success.
