KUALA LUMPUR: The Government will include automatic registration and eligibility for 18 year olds to become candidates in general elections, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The Prime Minister said that these amendments would be included in the Constitution 2019 Bill, to be tabled in this Parliament sitting.Dr Mahathir also said the Opposition had given their word to support the Bill, which requires a two-thirds majority vote to amend the Constitution.
Opposition leader Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who was also present in the press conference, thanked the government for taking their feedback into consideration. The Bill was tabled by Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman last Thursday , and was supposed to have been debated for the second reading on July 16.
