The Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association, Lagos State Branch, Dr Saliu Oseni, speaks with TUNDE AJAJA on the coronavirus spread, the palliatives and the compliance with the lockdownThe compliance is
not particularly good enough and we know why we don’t have 100 per cent compliance. But the truth is also that people are becoming uncomfortable with the economic situation. So, government really needs to do more about that. We are of the view that the law enforcement agents are not doing really well in ensuring social distancing at markets. However, I think the lockdown is having some impact because if that was not in place, we probably would have had more cases.
With the rise in the case almost every day now, should Nigeria not at this time consider nationwide lockdown as it has been done in some other countries? The truth is that we need a lot of enlightenment. Even when people have been allowed to go to the market, we need to let them know there are rules guiding that. People playing football on the streets should be told that that is not the essence of the lockdown. It is equally difficult to maintain social distancing in face-to-face houses where people share facilities and that fuels the argument that the measure adopted by some other countries cannot be applied here.
You know there is a popular saying that a hungry man is an angry man. A video went viral showing people stealing from a moving trailer carrying bags of rice. That was hunger. Government needs to change its approach to make sure the food packs get to the people who really need them. Hunger is likely to push people to do that because if you don’t eat you will die and what you are trying to prevent by the lockdown is death. Government needs to do more.
