He linked the illiteracy level in the town to the non-availability of schools for children, stressing that they were interested in education. Other oil-producing communities in the state include; Dumbe, Kantaga Gezimawa/Tangale, and Kantaga-Malam-Gambo and Tai; all closely interconnected and with huge crude oil and gas deposits. Villagers in the communities are predominantly farmers growing maize, sorghum, bambara nuts and beans among other crops. Electricity is strange to the community. Thus, the dwellers depend on batteries to power their transistor radios and torches.
Upon sighting the truck conveying our correspondent and others, despite the fact that many of the passengers were heading for Koimawa; a Wednesday market for traders and sellers from Gombe and Bauchi states, soldiers who noticed our correspondent’s striking difference ordered him to alight for identification.After trekking some metres away from the checkpoint, a junior officer was told to call him for further questioning by a senior officer identified only as Adamu.
The President, Major General, Muhammadu Buhari , at the inauguration of the crude oil drilling project in the community disclosed that one billion barrels of crude oil reserves and 500 billion standard cubic feet of gas exist in Kolmani River oil and gas fields. A 37-year-old mother of three, Marsya Japheth, told our correspondent that life had been unbearable with challenges, stressing that cost of living has become increasingly high.
