Only few people in the world today can boast of being to ‘hell’ and back. Nwakoro Chinedu, 29, is one of them.
On April 5, 2013, he did not only visit ‘hell’ but majestically sauntered back to earth despite the glaring hurdles encountered along the way. After visiting siblings for the Easter season that year, Chinedu, 23 at the time, had looked forward to arriving Enugu where he lived with his parents safely. The gifts his siblings showered him with – iPad, laptop among others – had made the trip to the eastern city quite anticipatory. He wanted to arrive home on time to test his new gadgets.
“At a point, I got very tired and slept off. By the time I woke up, I realised the bus I boarded had been engulfed with fire. “In the midst of that chaos, I managed to seize my breath a bit in order to sustain some energy to escape. My hands were already getting burnt at this point, so I used my shoe to break the window close to me.
“After walking for close to 15 minutes, I got to a village where people poured water on me and took me to a local clinic where a liquid substance was rubbed on my burnt body. “He and my brother came to see me the next morning. They were shaken by the extent of my injuries. My father didn’t understand how I survived with such burns,” he said.
“The journey to Enugu was hellish, I was in severe pains and my head was swollen. I was dying, my body was sticky and irritating. “They sprayed a peppery substance on my skin to heal the burns. I was in the hospital for months. After one month, they did skin grafting for me. “I only have some scars on my hands and neck now. I was always convinced that I would live to testify. My mother prayed for me every day, and it worked.

As if it was the hand of God, the momentary showers became the mainspring for a successful event. Quality people trooped in from far and near including non Ahmadis who according, to them were endeared to the group by their philosophy of ‘love for all, hatred for none’. It was also gathered that Africa’s richest man, and chairman of the largest indigenous industrial conglomerate, Alhaji Aliko Dangote who was on the list to deliver the first paper on: 'The Guiding Principles for Survival in Business without corruption in a mono-product economy' missed the occasion as a result of some issues on our air travel.
