Industry Minister Ed Husic’s outburst at gas company greed spurred a backlash, with the industry accusing him of “demonising and misrepresenting” the sector.
The federal government is debating whether to slap unprecedented price controls on gas companies through existing gas trigger laws as it urgently seeks a way to ease the burden of soaring energy bills confronting households and businesses.
Samantha McCulloch, chief executive of the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association slammed Husic’s “name-calling and sledging” of Australian gas companies, which she said support 80,000 workers and enable almost $500 billion of economic activity.“It is easy to misrepresent how the gas market works, but the facts are that average domestic prices are well below international prices,” she said.
While Bowen insisted last Friday at a meeting of state and territory energy ministers that “everything has to be on the table”, Chalmers said regulatory change was the government’s preference.program on Thursday, Chalmers said he would not rule out either cash subsidies or tax changes, but the government was focused on trying to find regulatory changes that could bring energy prices down.
“We are working on it more or less around the clock right now. And we will move on it as soon as we responsibly can,” he said.
