Political commentator Miranda Devine has slammed GetUp’s advertisement targeting Member for Warringah Tony Abbott, saying it has backfired and worked in favour of the former prime minister. GetUp released an ad on Tuesday depicting Mr Abbott as a lifesaver refusing to help a drowning swimmer, attempting to liken the behavior to Mr Abbott's attitude towards climate change.
Ms Devine rubbished the ad as ‘un-Australian and despicable’, saying ‘it’s not even remotely funny and I think GetUp has managed to pull off the incredible feat of drawing sympathy towards Tony Abbott’. As GetUp pulled the ad due to backlash on Wednesday, Ms Devine told Sky News, ‘even Mr Abbott’s worst detractors would not say that he hasn’t been an effective community member… he’s been a surf lifesaver, fought fires’.
