Gbajabiamila Bows To Pressure, Says Infectious Diseases Bill To Go Through Public Hearing
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, speaks during a meeting in Abuja on February 5, 2020.The controversial Control of Infectious Diseases Bill, 2020 being debated on the floor of the House of Representatives will be put to public hearing, the Speaker has said.
He, however, disagreed with those who condemned the timing of the bill, insisting that it was appropriate to enact such a bill at this time. “The current law severely constrains the ability of the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control to take proactive action to prevent the entry into Nigeria of infectious diseases and the management of public health emergencies when they occur.”Meanwhile, the House admitted members of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 into the chamber for an update in its efforts so far.
Gbajabiamila made the remarks against the backdrop of the controversies that have trailed the bill when it was speedily passed through the first and second readings in the House.
