Tawhi Tarfa could not flee as Boko Haram invaded Garkida town in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State on February 21, 2020, because his grandchildren were young.
The 85-year-old retired education officer appeared sad when our correspondent met him during the week. He noted that the latest attack on Garkida was the third since residents returned after the capture of the town in October 2014.
He continued, “Bitrus, a young man working with the Mason Technical School has a wife and two children. His wife told me that he left her and the kids indoors and went to the mountains. There was where most of the residents fled to and watched as some houses, churches and property were attacked by the insurgents. I was told that Bitrus’ principal realised he left some documents in his car at the school workshop.
Tawhi said, “There has been no word from him since then. We called his mobile several times the day he was taken away. The phone was later answered and we heard a hoarse voice speaking at the other end in a language resembling Kanuri or Shuwa.’’ He claimed that the concerned authorities were informed of the attacks four hours before the attackers invaded his constituency.
Head of local vigilantes in the area, Gideon Gana, speaking during the distribution of relief materials to 750 households affected by the insurgents, stated that the people would prefer government’s assistance in form of equipping local vigilantes to better defend the area against future aggression. Garnvnwa said, “That’s the kind of ‘aid’ we need most because this town is not far from Sambisa. After Biu, it is the only major town next to Sambisa forest.”
The Chairman, NEDC, Maj. Gen. Paul Tarfa , who described the attacks on his hometown as ‘very devastating’, said the attackers who looted hospitals, burnt churches and properties, were nearing their last days.
