A magistrate court in Zaria, Kaduna State, has granted bail to Mahmoud Shehu, a former Upper Shari’a Court Judge, who is accused of attacking a blind housewife. The court set bail conditions that include providing two civil servant sureties and paying a sum of ₦100,000. Shehu denies the allegations and the case is set for further hearing in February 2025.
A former Upper Shari’a Court Judge , Mahmoud Shehu, was granted bail by a Magistrate Court in Zaria, Kaduna State , following accusations of attacking a blind housewife. The court, presided by Senior Magistrate Ibrahim Adamu Salisu, released Shehu on Tuesday, imposing a bail condition that requires him to present two sureties who are civil servants at grade level 10. These guarantors must furnish their promotion letters, passport-sized photographs, home addresses, and contact details.
Additionally, Shehu is obligated to pay a bail sum of ₦100,000. The magistrate stipulated that failure to meet these requirements would result in Shehu's detention at the correctional facility until the next hearing, scheduled for February 11, 2025. Shehu faces re-indictment on charges of criminal trespass, assault, and application of force, allegedly violating Sections 327, 237, and 239 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2017. The prosecution, represented by Adamu Abubakar, alleged that the incident occurred on September 6, 2024, when the former judge purportedly broke into the residence of the visually impaired housewife, secured the main entrance, and physically assaulted her. According to the prosecution, two women who attempted to intervene were also assaulted during the incident. The victim sustained injuries and received medical treatment at the PHC Tudun Wada.When questioned by the court, Shehu denied the allegations. The case was initially presented to the Magistrate Court Tudun Wada, Zaria, on September 10, 2024, but faced multiple postponements. Following the recusal of Senior Magistrate Lukman Sidi for undisclosed reasons, the case was transferred to Chief Magistrate Court 1, Chediya, for reassignment. The upcoming hearing is expected to delve deeper into the accusations and the defendant's plea.
