More than 1000 residents in the regional NSW town of Forbes have been evacuated to higher ground as the state’s Central West prepares for its worst flooding event in 70 years.
NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet visited Forbes on Friday as river levels continue to rise with an expected peak on Friday night. “There’s been a fair bit of warning, so we’ve been able to get everything out they needed to get out, it’s not like flash flooding,” he said. “Now the whole town has gone into panic. I’m a bit pessimistic, but there’s a lot of people that weren’t around in 1990, and I think they’re in for a bit of a shock.”Cattle farmer Charles Laverty said about one third of his paddocks were already underwater and said farmers were struggling to recover from repeated bouts of destruction to crops and livestock.“The losses are going to be devastating for them.
