The Economic Community of West African States , in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, through the Nigerian Red Cross Society, has distributed relief materials to 100 victims of the 2020 flood disaster in three communities in Augie Local Council of Kebbi State.
The items are 100 pieces of 25kg bag of rice, 100 pieces of 10kg bags of beans, maize and sorghum, four-litre kegs of palm and groundnut oils, as well as household materials. The Secretary General, Nigerian Red Cross Society, Alhaji Abubakar Ahmed Kende, during the exercise in Tiggi, said the gesture was a tripartite effort to support victims of 2020 flood disaster in Tiggi, Babuce and Bayawa communities.Kende said during their assessment visit to the affected communities, it was discovered that flooding is their major problem. He, therefore, called on government at all levels, traditional rulers and individuals to find solution to the menace.
According to him, the flooding has given rise to such diseases as cholera in affected communities. He appealed to residents to avoid erecting structures in waterways, as water always finds its way. “Aside Kebbi State, the gesture covers 15 other states in Nigeria that were affected by the 2020 flood disaster,” he said. The Augie local council Chairman, Alhaji Lawali Mohammed, represented by the Director Social Development, Alhaji Musa Abubakar Argungu, appreciated the gesture. He urged other organisations to emulate the donors by assisting the victims.
