Had Greg Inglis not declared for Queensland and played for New South Wales, the Maroons’ eight-year Origin winning-streak would never have stood, says NRL great and Blues coach Brad Fittler.
The South Sydney talisman’s recent retirement drew an outpouring of reverence from the rugby league community after the 32-year-old struggled to get his mind and body right in a trying opening rounds of the 2019 season. Amid the celebration of the Redfern icon’s career, Fittler reflected on Inglis’ dominance at representative level and asserted had that had he not elected to play for Queensland, despite being born in NSW, the Maroons’ legacy would have looked very different today.
“I remember doing some research during that period and it was about when they’d won eight in a row,” Fittler said on“If I took all the tries out of Greg Inglis, the ones he scored that I thought no one else could score, I think it would have ended up being 4-4 if we had him for NSW.Alongside Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk, Johnathan Thurston and Billy Slater, Inglis often proved a defining factor for the Maroons in the centres across their 11-year dynasty.
