Zaccheus Adedeji has assumed office as the new helmsman and acting chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). He took over the Revenue House from Mohammed Nami.
Armed with a First-Class degree in Accounting from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, Adedeji is a highly qualified and experienced individual, and his appointment as FIRS chairman is a significant development.
“For those who deviate from their tax obligations, rest assured, we will enforce our responsibilities judiciously”, he stated, adding that his administration will implement a robust enforcement model that effectively defers tax evaders while maintaining fairness and transparency in the processes of the service.
Recall that President Tinubu had directed the outgoing FIRS Chairman, Muhammad Nami, to proceed on a three-month pre-retirement leave as provisioned by Public Service Rule 120243, with immediate effect, leading to his eventual retirement from service on December 8, 2023. During the ceremony at the Revenue House, the new boss acknowledged Nami and every member of the Federal Inland Revenue Service family, spanning from Coordinating Directors to all Senior Managers, for their unwavering dedication to the vital mission which has contributed to propelling the nation’s economic engine.
In the pursuit of a brighter fiscal future, the FIRS must be determined to align itself with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee. This collaboration will enable the service to shape a prosperous fiscal landscape that empowers the nation’s growth and development. However, the Acting FIRS Chairman has this to say for those who deviate from their tax obligations: “Rest assured, we will enforce our responsibilities judiciously. We will implement a robust enforcement model that effectively deters tax evaders while maintaining fairness and transparency in our processes.
