“Sometimes we’d like to see the province step up with more funding, but we’re doing the best we can with what we have at this point,” says Sutherland. “I don’t think that it’s reasonable that these small rural communities can sustain these large mitigation projects that are becoming necessary as we deal with the effects of climate change.”Article contentSicamous Fire Chief Brett Ogino noted his community of 2,400 does not have the ability to raise large amounts of money from property taxpayers.
In B.C., Sicamous is not alone in facing increased flood and debris flow risks following successive extreme wildfire seasons. “There is no storage capacity in the soil,” he said. “Burned hill slopes act like a parking lot. The amount of run-off becomes biblical.”
