Combat, meanwhile, is something all its own. While I love and occasionally miss the turn-based battles of Final Fantasies past, the real-time fighting here is undeniably action-packed and spectacular.

There’s the standard tap-to-slash and tap-to-shoot inputs for Clive’s sword and magic attacks, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. We eventually unlock dozens of powers and abilities that allow him to fire off and chain together obscenely powerful, visually amazing attacks that can make short work of groups of feebler foes and must be used strategically to stagger and whittle down the health bars of bigger baddies.

If there’s a criticism to be levelled at the combat, it’s simply that it feels a little defanged compared to early games in the series. I remember spending endless hours trying to best insanely powerful villains, attempting to cleverly leverage little-used spells and abilities to eke out some tiny advantage that would tip the scales in my favour. By comparison, these battles are much more forgiving and accessible, featuring mid-fight checkpoints and complete refills of health restoratives should Clive perish. I can see some folks being a little let down by the lack of punishing difficulty. As for me, I’m a pretty happy camper.
