Former West United man, and ESPN pundit, Shaka Hislop, has said for sure that Lionel Messi would break Cristiano Ronaldo's FIFA Club World Cup goal record. While Ronaldo is not playing in the 32-team competition, Messi and his Inter Miami side drew their first 0-0 against Al Ahly of Egypt. However, Hislop said even if Messi happens to break the record, it won't be long before another player takes over due to the competition's new extended format.

Messi won the FIFA Club World Cup thrice with Barcelona , scoring five goals in six games. Ronaldo, on the other hand, won the competition four times, once with Manchester United , and three times with Real Madrid . Ronaldo is currently the leading goalscorer in the competition's history, with seven goals in eight appearances. Messi failed to close the gap as Inter Miami were unable to beat an African side in the tournament opener.
