The Federal Government has reiterated the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for children but raised concerns that an estimated 20,000 women die annually due to poor breastfeeding.

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, stated this in Abuja on Tuesday during a press briefing to commemorate the 2020 Breastfeeding Week with the theme, ‘Support Breastfeeding for a healthier planet.’

The event was jointly organised by Civil Society-Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria, Alive and Thrive, UNICEF, Nutrition International, Breakthrough Action, Action Against Hunger, HKI and Save the Children. Ehanire said the benefit of breastfeeding to both mother and baby included giving babies stronger immunity, as well as reducing risk of suffering many childhood illnesses and infections.

He said, “It is also associated with longer-term health benefits including reduced risk of overweight and obesity in childhood and adolescence.”All rights reserved.
