It is no use denying that all is not well between Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and his former predecessor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel. Rumour of the
perceived frosty relationship has been milling around for too long, though the latter has always dismissed the insinuation as mere conjecture. It is high time to put things in a proper perspective.
Then, where is the face-off coming from? First, let us put logic to the test. If as a friend, you turn your face to the other side while I celebrate my success, what are you? You are a friend worse than an enemy? You call yourself an ally but you fraternize with my adversaries. How are you to me? Do I see you as a trusted ally? No, I need to watch my back because, with a friend like you, I don’t need an enemy.
OGD is not fair to Governor Abiodun. His survival strategy is crude, vindictive, and unbecoming. With combined factors of his age and former position as the number one citizen of Ogun State, he is a statesman in his own right. And he deserves the respect of all and sundry for that sacred office and vice versa. As a member of the ruling party, whose genuine desire is to serve the people, he should be seen in the front row anytime there is a state function.
He knew he could land in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission dungeon, if he decided to fight his battles alone with his immediate successor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, who initiated the trial against him, especially with the baggage already weighing heavily on his neck. He knew he needed a solid ally to join forces with to be able to weather the storm.
As governor and the leader of the party, Price Abiodun had the power of knife and yam to declare him ‘persona non-grata’ just as his successor did. But because of his magnanimity and his kind-heartedness, he set aside his antecedents and welcomed him into the fold with an open hand. Yet the same Abiodun, who voluntarily offered him political asylum in APC, is the same man he is scheming to pull down, fighting a proxy war simply because of his ordinate ambition for the 2027 power game.
Apart from the controversy surrounding his nomination as a senatorial candidate, there is also a long list of other anti-party activities that have already cast doubt on the sincerity of OGD as a loyal member of the APC. One, all through the electioneering period, he routinely ignored the rules of engagement as well as procedural arrangements. First, he kicked off his campaign without the due approval of the state chapter of the party.
