As the golf world's rich are set to get richer this weekend it poses the question: Is it incumbent on golf's decision makers to spread some of that money into other parts of the game, including Australia's tour, which has been described as 'inept'?

It's the big quandary for the PGA Tour, right now.

It's a typically American end-of-year playoff system that basically comes across as a huge monetary reward for already winning a truckload of money. His winnings this year alone total US$7.7 million . In this case, play one of the most difficult sports on earth mind-blowingly well. They deserve it and certainly shouldn't feel guilty about it.

Preventing players from getting comfortable on secondary tours so that they strive for the top is understandable, but there is a plethora of those stories to go with it, most of which don't end in a fairytale. "Arguably the most fun events to watch outside of the majors are the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup at the end of every year and they're playing for nothing more than national pride. Even Olympic golf, which I was a sceptic of, I found myself transfixed to a six-way playoff for bronze.

Without drawcard players and crowds, the events are of little benefit to a broadcaster, and Golf Australia simply cannot afford to prop them up. "It's an absurdity that we have that is carrying on around the world. It's not good for us, not good for South Africa and many stand-alone tours," Allen said.

Allen proposed hosting a World Golf Championship event or similarly high-profile PGA Tour tournament in Australia to attract stars, with the Australian Open or Masters hosted soon after, encouraging the big names to stick around.
