A federal judge in Arkansas has struck down key provisions of a law that would have made it easier to challenge and restrict access to library materials. The law, signed by Republican Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders in 2023, faced legal challenges from a coalition including the Central Arkansas Library System, who argued it could lead to censorship and intimidation of librarians and booksellers.

The law would have created a new process to challenge library materials and request that they be relocated to areas not accessible to children. The measure was signed by Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders in 2023, but an earlier ruling had temporarily blocked it from taking effect while it was being challenged in court.
