The clash between former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, and the Senator representing Ekiti South, Biodun Olujimi, is compounding the woes of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, ABIODUN NEJO writes
However, the primaries that saw Olusola emerging victorious even against the combined team of Adeyeye and Olujimi left a sour taste in the mouths of their supporters. This crisis, which has seen the party operating from two opposing camps, however, gave birth to the events that followed the March 7, 2020, ward congresses and the attendant emergence of parallel executive councils at the ward level and litigation over the congresses.
“In Ekiti State, it must happen whether you like Olujimi’s face or not; she is the symbol and emblem of the party. Why are we creating hatred in Ekiti State when there should be none?” While the Fayose group is fielding a former state House of Assembly member, Bisi Kolawole, as its candidate for the state chairman position, the Olujimi side is presenting a former House of Representatives member, Kehinde Odebunmi; time will tell if they will contest in the same congress.
The senator said she had accepted Fayose’s apology, saying, “Fayose has apologised and who am I not to accept it? We are all on the same page and shall work together as long as he is ready to submit to the supremacy of the party constitution.” However, the D-Day saw things go the way of parallel congresses by the two sides. While one side claimed the congresses were held in the morning, the other said congresses were held in the evening. There was only one congress.
“Those close to former governor Fayose believe in the old ways; so they did not hold any congress. They are alleging that they conducted their congress in the night and the constitution of the party does not allow that. It is actually dangerous to gather people in the night.Any other purported congress is just political manoeuvring.”
Piqued by the turn of events and fears that the NWC might accept the list for the ward congresses, the Olujimi group filed a suit to compel the NWC not to recognise the list sent to it by Manu until the actual winners of the congresses were determined by the court. The fallout of the parallel ward congresses was the parallel ward executive councils inaugurated on April 30 and May 1, 2020, by the Fayose and Olujimi groups, respectively following the expiration of the tenure of the past ward excos.
Speaking on the ward excos inaugurated by the Olujimi group on May 1, Olugbade said, “Basically, immediately the tenure of an exco expires, it ceases to be. If there is an election, those people elected take over automatically and their tenure commences. It is implied. There were proper ward congresses conducted in the morning, winners emerged and they have taken over.”
