Bimbo Oke, Project Coordinator of Demi Care Foundation, the non-governmental organisation that publicised the story of Favour Okor, 17, who was allegedly raped, beaten and left for dead by 28-year-old Robinson Godday in Agbara, Ogun State, tells GBENRO ADEOYE about Favour’s condition, among other issuesI received a text message about the incident from a journalist in Ogun State. So, I thought I should verify before going public with the information.
She was able to mutter ‘Robinson’ and since her neighbours were there, it was easy to know who it was. You know, they had arrested the guy before for defiling her. So they knew it was the same guy and thank God she spoke before she went into a coma. And I think the guy has confessed. We understand Governor Abiodun is interested in the case and has said the girl must not die.It is her condition that I am worried about now. She appears to be lifeless.
We had the case of Uwaila Omozuwa in Benin City, Edo; then that of Barakat Bello and Azeezat Shomuyiwa in Ibadan, Oyo; all of whom were raped and killed. Do you think the social media is responsible for bringing such cases to public knowledge more than before or it is becoming more rampant? I think it is actually becoming more rampant but I don’t really know what could be responsible for it. People need more awareness and there should be stiff punishment for sex offenders. For instance, the police should not have released Robinson because I learnt he succeeded in raping Favour the first time, so why did they release him? His family would have gone to the police to beg and give them money. Even the first time, they said there were bite marks all over her body.
