The protests come as months of anti-racism protests have increasingly pitted Americans against one another
In the Atlanta suburb of Stone Mountain, the site of a giant memorial to leaders of the breakaway, pro-slavery Confederate states, militia members, Confederate flag-wavers and supporters of President Donald Trump faced off against more than a hundred protesters, many carrying signs or wearing T-shirts supporting Black Lives Matter.
After hours of shouting, the protest devolved into fights with people punching and kicking each other, drawing in police backed by a SWAT team. In Portland, Oregon, where activists have staged anti-racism demonstrations for more than 100 days, members of the right wing Patriot Prayer militia scuffled with Black Lives Matter activists.
Local TV reported shots were fired and showed shell casings they found on the ground at the scene. No one was reported injured by gunshots. Our Morning Update and Evening Update newsletters are written by Globe editors, giving you a concise summary of the day’s most important headlines.
