A lack of access to family planning resources in Akwa Ibom State is leading to increased maternal mortality, teenage pregnancies, and unsafe abortions, posing serious health risks for women and girls.
The shortage of family planning supplies and resources in Akwa Ibom State, particularly in rural areas, is increasing the health risks for women and girls of reproductive age. A correspondent's visit to several local government areas revealed a rise in maternal mortality rates, teenage pregnancies, unsafe abortion s, and subsequent poverty.
Data from the 2018 Nigeria Demography and Health Survey showed Akwa Ibom as having one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy (12%) and abortion among young people. The survey also indicated a Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) of 520/100,000 live births. A community leader in Ikot Ebom Itam expressed concern over the recent deaths of two mothers (one with three children, another with four) during childbirth and the increasing number of teenage girls becoming pregnant and dropping out of school. He emphasized the importance of family planning to prevent these issues and complications like Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF), often caused by early childbirth. He encourages his community members of reproductive age to utilize family planning services. He states, 'Yes, I'm aware of family planning and always encourage people to take up the services. We are losing our daughters to childbirth complications and we are not happy about that. Just recently, we lost two women. Family planning reduces health risks on women and gives them more control over their reproductive lives. With better health and greater control over their lives, women can take advantage of education, employment, and civic opportunities.
