A 22-year-old man, Jacob Emmanuel, has reportedly died in police custody in Abuja, following months of detention and alleged torture by officers of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command and the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Kado.
According to Sahara Reporters, Emmanuel was arrested in February 2024 at his home in Mpape, allegedly concerning the theft of a television. His mother, a widow, witnessed the arrest and has since faced relentless efforts to secure his release. Emmanuel's family filed multiple petitions with the FCT Commissioner of Police, the National Human Rights Commission , the Inspector-General of Police, and other authorities, but no action was taken.
