Websites spreading health-related misinformation generated over 3.8 billion views on Facebook over the last one year, with numbers peaking at 460 million views in April as the coronavirus pandemic spread across the world, aHealth-related misinformation was viewed over 460 million times on Facebook in April.

Tackling misinformation about the coronavirus pandemic has been a major problem for platforms like Facebook, the report noted that a single article that falsely claimed that the American Medical Association was encouraging doctors and hospitals to overestimate Covid-19 deaths, was seen over 160 million times.

The report identified a group of misinformation ‘superspreaders’ which included 42 Facebook pages that had 28 million followers and generated around 800 million views.that it had taken down 7 million posts pushing misinformation regarding Covid-19 from its flagship site and Instagram between April and June, and the company also added warning labels to 98 million Covid-19 misinformation posts that were deemed not harmful enough to take down.

In a departure from its unwillingness to moderate content posted by political leaders, earlier this month, Facebooka post from Donald Trump’s page for spreading misinformation about Covid-19, where he had asserted that children were “almost immune” from the disease. Avaaz’s report, which analyzed data until May 27, found that only 16% of all health misinformation content it discovered displayed a warning label from Facebook., “We share Avaaz’s goal of limiting misinformation, but their findings don’t reflect the steps we’ve taken to keep it from spreading on our services.
